The excitement was palpable under the lights of Bronte Athletic Park as former Canadian Women’s National Team star Kara Lang stepped up to the mark to calmly bury the winning penalty shot for her Red Team at the Oakville Soccer Club 40th Anniversary Celebrity Game.
The evening kicked off on a special note as Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn presented Lang with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal to recognize her outstanding commitment to her community and her country.
Young OSC players were delighted to accompany the celebrity players on to the field as Caitlin Bell of Canada’s Got Talent captivated the crowd with her rendition of the National Anthem.
It was evident from the opening whistle that the game would rival many professional matches as competitive spirit and stunning soccer skills were displayed from both sides all over the pitch – much to the enjoyment of the very enthusiastic crowd!
It was a tight game as Team Captains Lang and Jason deVos led their squads to a riveting 4 – 4 draw after regulation time. Eyes of adoring fans were fixated on the field as Lang, deVos, Pinball Clemons, Rohan Ricketts, Clare Rustad, Michele Houchen, Scott Laughton and Damon Allen all displayed fantastic athletic abilities and impressive soccer skills.
Red Team goals were scored by Lang, Ricketts, Michael Vonella and Diego Maradona, while journalist Ben Rycroft notched two for the White Team along with goals from Rustad and deVos. After the hotly contested match, tension ran even higher as the Red Team narrowly prevailed in a nail-biter penalty shootout, at the foot of their fearless leader Lang.
The score could have easily been much higher but keepers Mike Vanderjagt, Kate McKenna and Daniel Squizzato were solid between the posts for both teams. At the end, Vanderjagt was named player of the game for the White Team while McKenna took home the honour for the Red Team.
After the final whistle many of the celebrity players signed autographs and took pictures with a large number of fans eager to meet their favourite celebrities.
