The Oakville Girls U17B team capped off an impressive 2011 season by capturing the South Region Soccer League Elite League Cup on Saturday September 17 at Leisure Park in Flamborough, beating Niagara United A 3-0 for the title. It was the fifth meeting between the two sides this past summer, the Cup finalists finishing one-two during the Elite regular season as well.
Oakville pushed the pace early in the game, penetrating the wings effectively and seeing a couple of crosses courtesy of Megan McMillan as Cheyenne Bruyns just missed a finish inside the 18-yeard box.
McMillan would make another strong run down the left, beating her defender and hitting a well struck ball that smacked the far post. Team captain Meaghan Perrotta controlled the ensuing rebound and buried the secondary effort to put Oakville up 1-0 early in the contest.
Both finalists worked the ball well, maintaining quality possession throughout and just missing a pair of decent chances at either end of the pitch. Niagara had a flurry of good opportunities late in the first half, but were unable to put anything past Oakville goalie Jessica Demello, who in the previous six games leading up to the final had registered an impressive four shutouts (17 in total during the season).
At almost the halfway point of the second frame, Oakville would convert again, Bruyns knocking in a corner kick from teammate Emma Mezgec’s perfectly placed cross - Oakville up 2-0.
Just mere minutes after that second strike, attacking midfielder Anna Longrigg played a well intended ball to the edge of Niagara’s box, and Oakville striker Dana Chomski applied pressure and created confusion for Niagara’s central defender and keeper, the ball finding the back of the goal after an inadvertent pass back between the two.
Oakville continued to play solid defense and gave up few quality breaks against for the remainder of the half, the girls charging the pitch on the official’s final whistle after a hard fought victory over an extremely good Niagara side.
“I am very proud of my teammates for our achievements - as a team - this year,” said Perrotta, after being presented the League Cup trophy. “We set ourselves several goals as a group leading into the season and winning the League Cup was right at the top. I’m so proud of what we did this year and am already looking forward to working towards next season.”
This year, Oakville finished second behind Niagara during SRSL season play, won the U18 West Niagara Invitational and were runners up in the Frank Sobil Spring Classic in Oshawa.
