AboutMatchOfficials

The Oakville Soccer Club is committed to the training and development of soccer match officials by providing an environment that allows them to maximize their potential within the profession. OSC offers a multi-tiered program focused on the various levels of soccer offered at the Club.

Career Path

OSC offers three levels of officiating: Game Leader (U8/9), Small Sided Game (U10/11), and Entry Level (U12+). Young officials usually begin in the Game Leader or Small-Sided Game categories to develop their knowledge and confidence.

Game Leader (U8/9)

Introduced by Ontario Soccer in 2016, the Game Leader program serves as an entry point for officiating, introducing players, coaches, and officials to the game. It emphasizes learning, development, and overall enjoyment. Candidates must be 12+ to complete this certification. OSC sees it as a valuable introduction to officiating and coaching.

Small-Sided Game (U10/11)

This game format for U10 and U11 players has modified rules to foster skill development. The focus is on participation rather than results, with no scores or standings kept. Officials educate players and coaches while managing the game within the Laws of the Small Sided Game. Candidates for the Small-Sided Game certification course must be 12 years old by March 31 or earlier in 2023.

Entry Level (U12 and up)

This game format, from U12 to Adult, follows FIFA Laws of the Game. Officials ensure the laws are upheld in a safe environment. OSC encourages officials to continue their education from the Small Sided Game level. U12 games are played 9v9 on a modified field using FIFA Laws. While those ages 14+ are encouraged to start at this level, officials can also choose to begin at the Small Sided Game level.

Career Advancement

Officials have opportunities to upgrade their skills at various competitive levels. Through collaboration with the Peel Halton District and Ontario Soccer, OSC provides regional and provincial programs for officials of all ages. The Club strongly encourages regular advancement in education and offers advanced training through Canada Soccer programs for qualified applicants.
